The Atacama Dessert sky is one of the clearest for star gazing! It’s dry conditions (it usually gets less than a millimeter of rain/year), high altitude (8,000 feet), and low level of light pollution (there is pretty much nothing else there besides San Pedro) make the Atacama dessert a perfect place for seeing planets, the moon, and the stars of the Southern Hemisphere.
We went on an amazing star gazing tour, where we looked through high powered telescopes
and learned about constellations, star clusters, and the moon. This was a photo that I took of the moon through a telescope. It is so clear that you can see the moon’s craters!
